Tennis summer Recap Part 2
Aug 18, 2023
After an extremely successful start to the summer with the title in Heilbronn and the final in Lyon, I then suffered a few setbacks. The initial plan was to play Wimbledon with Jan Lennard Struff, but unfortunately he was injured shortly before the tournament began. Things like that happen, and without his help I wouldn't have gotten into Wimbledon, but still very bitter.
In July the ATP tournaments in Gstaad and Hamburg were coming up, the first chances for Constantin Frantzen and me to prove ourselves as a team on the ATP Tour. We went to Gstaad highly motivated, the tournament has a great atmosphere and the height suits our powerful game. Unfortunately, I broke my left thumb on my first serve game. I immediately noticed that something had happened, as fractures never swell for me, and with the adrenaline of the match we were able to finish the game. I then had an X-ray in Stuttgart and found out that I had a clear fracture. Luckily, tendons and other structures were still intact.
Our biggest German world rankings tournament in Hamburg was just around the corner, and the Bundesliga season. Both were absolute highlights for me, which is why I decided to continue playing despite the break. I also discussed the risk with my doctor, fortunately the bone coped well with everything. After another x-ray a few days ago, the doctor assured me that everything would be completely healed in 1-2 weeks.
Of course I couldn't play backhand in Hamburg or in the Bundesliga. I tried to use the time to work on my slice and the other shots. In Hamburg I hadn't gotten used to the handicap yet, where we were unfortunately clearly defeated by the Roland Garros finalists Gille/Veilen. In the Bundesliga I was able to play excellently in singles and doubles and our team managed to stay in the league in the end. I could hardly break with my handicap, but I was always able to hit my serves very well. I've only gotten very few breaks since the break. But that's the only thing I want to take away from it 😃
I can now play backhand again and the tour in Augsburg starts again next week. Tournaments will follow almost every week until the end of the year.
Sporty greetings
